The Forces Affecting Continued Expansion of the Shipping Services Industry
Shipping services is one of the key elements in the global supply chain. Without shipping services, businesses would suddenly find themselves scrambling to find alternate methods of getting their shipments to their customers. Cargo companies have enjoyed unprecedented growth over the last few years because of the sudden opening up of the global market place. Thanks to the internet people from all over the world can buy your product at any time of the day or night and despite shipping costs, people do often opt to purchase items from far off countries. However, individual sales are but a fraction of the billions of dollars made every year through commercial business shipping interests and that is why businesses will never hire a shipping services supplier without first getting a shipping quote.
Businesses sometimes make money on very small margins. So, if they are spending too much on shipping services they will have to find the cargo company offering them the best rates; this reality is one of the forces that will shape the future of the shipping services industry. Fuels costs are constantly rising. Lately, fuel costs have risen rather dramatically and all indicators point to further hikes down the line. If it costs the shipping services suppliers more money to operate their carriers, those costs will eventually have to be passed down to their clients. Higher costs will definitely have an impact on the shipping services industry.
Over the last few years, the shipping services industry has manage to expand its reach and its offerings quite dramatically. It is now possible to send a shipment to virtually any part of the world. While there is the chance that such rapid expansion can continue at the same clip, the more likely scenario will be that it will have to slow down considerably in the very near future. Such a rapid expansion is unsustainable long-term for one very simple reason: infrastructure. Currently the shipping services industry uses the existing infrastructure that is currently in place to access destinations all of the world. However, the capacity to accommodate the increasing number of shipments is nearing a saturation point and it is not possible for businesses to build new infrastructure rapidly enough to keep up with demand. Therefore, through simple logistics, the industry's expansion will have to slow while the infrastructure needed to sustain its growth is being built.
The other force that will determine the future expansion of the shipping services industry is the environmental footprint that the industry is leaving in its wake. While major strides have been made in creating energy efficient engines for the carriers doing the major lifting, the sheer volume means that the savings are nominal when compared to the CO2 that is still being emitted.
There is no clear answer to just what the shipping services industry can do to ensure that, while its expansion will have to slow down, it does not have to stop altogether. The future is still bright, if a little foggy.
